Holidays

David and I seem to do well in selecting holiday accommodation. We liked Sygun Fawr in Beddgelert in North Wales so much we have been there four years on the trot and now we have discovered the Tremarne Hotel in Mevagissey in Cornwall.

Both places are clean, well presented and have fantastic views of their surroundings. They also have wonderful food and are small and cosy, avoiding the facelessness of huge corporate hotels but managing to keep some distance which is difficult to avoid in some guesthouses.

Our room at the Tremarne was huge, had a bed that was big enough for me and David (and we are not small, let me tell you) and, wonderfully for the UK, a balcony.

The other reason we liked both places is that they are run by gay couples but are not obviously gay. This makes a huge but indefinable difference.

Dave RIP

One last comment about Dave. We had the funeral yesterday. It was a very moving service.

I've mentioned before that Jean and Dave had broken the terrible British taboo of not being able to talk about what happens afterwards. Amongst other things, Dave was able to say what he wanted to happen at the service, the music he wanted played and, most importantly, he was able to choose the hospice chaplain as the man he wanted to conduct the service.

He was a perfect choice. He had time in which to get to know Dave before he died and be able to articulate what he knew to paint a picture of Dave in our minds that we all recognised.

There were very few dry eyes in that service and I think we will all miss Dave in one way or another although Jean will miss him most of all.

Dave

Dave, my brother-in-law, died at the weekend.

Since Christmas he suffered from the effects of an operation to remove a cancerous kidney, then severe infection and, finally, secondary cancer. He was not out of some form of care in all that time.

He was in hospital for several months after Christmas. Some of that time was in intensive care due to the infections he picked up on the ward. Then he was briefly in a convalescent home before succumbing to another infection and a recurrence of the cancer but this time in his liver and his lungs, leading to another spell in hospital and then a hospice.

He never complained and always put other people first even when he was in pain. He had my nephew arrange a very small birthday party for my sister a few weeks ago.

My sister hardly left his side and had to watch as his condition slowly deteriorated and he became thinner and thinner through not being able to eat.

I feel greatly for her and I can only imagine what she must be going through right now. They had a very strong relationship and now he's gone. She must miss him like mad.

Clean and green?

Today a coach passed me as I was waiting for a bus. It was belching exhaust fumes quite heavily.

What made me laugh, however, was that just after I noticed the thick cloud of exhaust from the coach, I read the slogan on its side boasting how it was cleaner for the environment.

Obviously not that one.
